Conference Day 2 Highlights!

Here we are at the second and final day of the 6th Annual IACRN conference.  Yesterday’s session ended with a lively presentation by Anna Young, from MIT, who presented the MakerNurse project, an intriguing project highlighting nursing ideas and innovations.  We continued our “making” this morning with working meetings of all the committees over a continental breakfast.   Keynote addresses included presentations from Kelly Willenberg on research compliance and Pam Grace on moral distress, as well as Dr. Greg Koski, President and Co-Founder of the Alliance for Clinical Research Excellence and Safety who spoke about how our groups can work together on global standardization of clinical research and clinical research professionals.  Breakout sessions had an international flavor as we heard about the roles of clinical research nurses in China, Israel, and Japan.

Just before lunch we heard from this year’s Distinguished Clinical Research Nurse, Mary Larkin.  Mary, first and foremost a research nurse, now serving as the assistant director of the MGH Diabetes Center, spoke about what it means to be a clinical research nurse.  She spoke of her own experiences and the experiences of nurses she interviewed as part of an oral history project sponsored by the Massachusetts General Hospital School of Nursing Alumnae and showed us how looking back on history will help us prepare for the future of our profession.

Our busy day concluded with a talk by Dr. Clare Hasting, Chief Nursing Officer at the NIH on the state of the science of clinical research nursing.   It was a fitting end to an inspiring 2 days of presentations, panels, and discussions.

Look out for your evaluation email, which should arrive in your inbox sometime today.  These evaluations are crucially important in allowing us to assess this year’s conference sessions and plan for next year, as well providing you with CEUs.  We would like to thank Brian Beardslee, Katherine Hall and all the members of their committee, as well as our Headquarters staff from Kassalen Meetings & Events, Helaine Labovitz and Debbie Zaparoni for all their hard work in making this year’s conference a success.

If you could not attend this year’s conference, we hope to see you next year in the Washington/Baltimore area.  In the meantime, please get involved!  All committees are accepting members.  To join one or learn more, please check out our website at

At preconference on Wednesday our "Lego Ladies" created a new group of genetics gurus.
